Conversation Tips & Systems

Post-Interaction Ritual
Immediately after a call, spend 30 seconds updating their [[Person Note]].
- Log: New job details, names of family members, specific struggles, upcoming dates (surgery, trips).
- Next Time: Review this note before calling to ask specific follow-up questions.
The "Storyworthy" Bank
My life is the content. Stop saying "Not much" when asked what's new.
Capture Strategy:
When something funny, frustrating, or weird happens, log it in [[Daily Note]]
Structure of a Good Micro-Story:
- The Hook: "I made a huge mistake..." (Not: "I went shopping.")
- The Struggle: "I couldn't find the limes and argued with a machine."
- The Resolution: "Turns out, I was scanning a lemon."
Conversation Starters (The Opener)
The "Update" Replacements
- "What is the best thing that happened to you this week?"
- "What is the most annoying thing you had to deal with today?" (Venting creates bonds).
- "Working on any personal projects lately, or just trying to survive?"
For Family (Nostalgia)
- "I was just thinking about [Relative/Pet]. Do you have a favorite memory of them?"
- "What is one meal you wish you could eat right now?"
- "Who do you think I take after more, Mom or Dad?"
For Friends (Fun/Hypothetical)
- "If you could teleport anywhere for dinner right now, where would we go?"
- "Watched anything lately that was actually good, or is it all trash?"
- "Unpopular opinion time: I think [Popular Thing] is overrated. Do you agree?"
Deep / Connection
- "What’s a habit you’re trying to break right now?"
- "What is the biggest thing giving you stress this week?"
- "Do you feel like you have more or less free time compared to last year?"
Keeping the Conversation Going (The Middle)
On Calls / In Person
The FORD Method (Topics that always work):
- Family / Friends
- Occupation / School
- Recreation (Books, Movies, Hobbies)
- Dreams / Plans (Travel, Holidays)
Conversation Threading:
Listen for "hooks" (nouns/verbs) to ask follow-up questions.
- Statement: "I was tired so I just cooked dinner."
- Thread 1 (Emotion): "Why so tired? Busy week?"
- Thread 2 (Activity): "I love cooking. What did you make?"
General to Specific:
- Instead of: "How is work?"
- Ask: "Is your boss still driving you crazy with [Specific Issue]?"
On WhatsApp
Show, Don't Tell:
Send a photo of your environment/food instead of asking "What's up?"
The Double-Text Opener:
Never send just "Hi".
- "Hey! 👋 I was just listening to that song you recommended. It's stuck in my head."
Voice Notes:
Use for stories that are too long to type. Bridge the gap between text and call.
